Fishing:
State Parks:
Eagle Nest Lake: This 2,400 surface acre lake offers some of the best trout and kokanee salmon fishing in the state. Seasonal recreation includes boating, hiking, picnicking, and cross-country skiing, with opportunities to see an abundance of birds and other wildlife, including elk, dear, bears, and eagles. Set in the scenic Moreno Valley and surrounded by two of the state’s highest peaks, Baldy Mountain and Wheeler Peek. At 8,300 feet in elevation, the park offers a cool retreat from the summer heat for fisherman, boaters, campers and wildlife enthusiasts. A new state of the art green visitor center features exhibits, a classroom, and expansive patio overlooking the lake, making Eagle Nest Lake an ideal location for wildlife viewing. In the winter, ice fishing and snowmobiling are popular sports when ice thickness permits. Snowmobiling is limited to the lake surface.

Cimarron Canyon: Set in New Mexico’s high country, where spectacular palisade cliffs and clear running waters dominate the landscape, Cimarron Canyon State Park is part of the 33,116-acre Colin Neblett Wildlife Area – the largest wildlife area in the state.
Angler’s Delight
The cool, high mountain park offers excellent trout fishing. Anglers can fish eight miles of premier brown trout waters for stocked browns or rainbows. Smaller trout and solitude can be found in the Cimarron River’s tributaries –Clear Creek and Tolby Creek
Wildlife Abounds
Wildlife viewing and bird watching is plentiful. Elk, deer, bear, turkey and grouse attract hunters in the fall and winter.
Favorite Activities
Crenelated granite formations make up sheer palisade cliffs that dominate the park’s scenery. From the main canyon, day hikes and cross-country skiing are popular.
Getting There
Cimarron Canyon State Park is three miles east of Eagle Nest along US 64, as shown on this map of the area. The park is part of the Colin Neblett Wildlife Management Area owned by the New Mexico State Game Commission and the Department of Game and Fish, originally funded in part by the Sport Fish and Wildlife Restoration Act.

Coyote Creek: Solitude, scenery and some of the best mountain trout fishing in New Mexico await visitors at the park, which sits at 7,700 feet in the eastern foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. It is an ideal place to camp, hike or fish. (575-387-2328).
Coyote Creek State Park is nestled in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains along a meandering stream. Enclosed by a forest of spruce and pine, the small valley displays abundant wildflowers and beautiful fall foliage. The park is ideal for fishing, family camping and leisurely nature walks.
Take a Break
Private campsites are scattered along the creek, which is sheltered by cottonwood trees and willow plants. The park’s refreshing temperature offer relief during the height of New Mexico’s summers.
Fishing and Hiking Extras
Coyote Creek has the most densely stocked waters in New Mexico. Trout are abundant and provide excellent fishing for children of all ages. In addition, the park offers 1.5 miles of hiking trails through a forest of ponderosa pines.

Coyote Creek State Park is 17 miles north of Mora via NM 434.

Rafting
Rio Grande: Rafting on the Rio Grande some sections are for well experienced rafters and whitewater kayakers for the most part with a short section available as a 1/2 day in the Orilla Verde BLM Recreation Area and the Velarde all day run. In all cases GPS locations are provided for general reference only and not for navigation purposes. (Check your waypoints for your own GPS map base!)
